The Ray-Pec High School Track and Field team had a successful weekend competing April 18-19 at the Eastern Relays in Louisville, KY. A new school record was set by the Sprint Medley team of Sarai Clark, Moriah Tucker, Kynah Simmons, and Amaya Hill, placing 2nd with a time of 1:47. Gabe Voelker set a new school record when he placed 3rd in the 3200m race with a time of 9:03.
Many runners showed strong performance out of the gate, with Ricky Johnson placing 10th in the 110 hurdles with his record time of 15.27. Kynah Simmons placed 4th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.07; Sher’Mar Bowie placed 19th in the 400-meter race with a time of 50.79; Amaya Hill placed 2nd in the 300m hurdles with a time of 36.44; Ricky Johnson placed 14th in the 300m hurdles with a time of 42.79; and Amerie Wright placed 29th in the 800-meter race with a personal record time of 2:26.
Relays performed strongly with the Boys 4x800 placing 8th (8:23) and the Girls 4x100 placing 2nd with a state-leading time of 47.96, and the Girls 4x200 placing 2nd with a time of 1:43.29.
Field events looked impressive with Derick Perry placing 7th in the shot put with a huge personal record of 49’ (14.93 meters), Moriah Tucker placing 6th in Long Jump in 17’10 (5.43 meters), and Sarai Clark placing 3rd in shot. In the Boys Pole Vault, Ray-Pec had three athletes place in the top 11: Oakley Shafer, 3rd; Christian Kurtz, 7th; and Ethan Hill, 11th.
With over 125 teams from eight different states, Ray-Pec showed grit and determination throughout this event. After the 300m hurdles, the girls' team held the overall lead by 9 points with three events left, but ended up placing 3rd, just shy of winning 1st place by 4 points. The boys team placed 15th overall.
