Final rehearsals are under way for the Raymore-Peculiar High School Theatre Department production of the comedy-drama "Marvin’s Room." Performances of Marvin’s Room will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5; Friday, May 6; and Saturday, May 7; and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 8, in the Ray-Pec High School theatre.
This powerful and funny play is about caring for those we love while we ourselves are dealing with illness. "Marvin’s Room" by Scott McPherson follows the story of Bessie and her estranged sister, Lee, who are forced back into each other’s lives to confront a family crisis. Winner of the 1991–1992 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and the 1991–1992 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Play, "Marvin’s Room" deals with themes of empathy, loneliness, and dying with both humor and heart.
The cast includes Paige Showen as Bessie, Blake Oser as Doctor Wally, Madison Busby as Ruth, Owen Phillips as Marvin, Xander Blackmon as Bob, Kennedy Kinnick as Lee, Jillian Collom as Doctor Charlotte, Chase Cunningham as Hank, Landon Whitten as Charlie, Irelynn Sloan as the Retirement Home Director, and Elijah O’Brien as Charlie on the Saturday evening performance.
Working behind the scenes are Teacher Todd Schnake as the director, and Teacher Dane Schnake, and Patrons Pam Schnake, Michael Connelly and Kay Connelly as production assistants. The lighting designer is Jillian Griffin. The assistant directors are students Avery Monnig and Alexis Balentine. The stage manager is Madi Priest. The sound designer is Aisha Yanez-Corea. Props are overseen by Abigail Anderson and Madi Priest. The costume, hair and make-up crew is headed up by Kennedy Varner.
